Skyward Sword has many other improvements. However, the button-control option is a major upgrade for people who like playing their Switches in portable mode, or anyone who won’t/can’t play with motion controls. You have to hold down a button for manual camera movement.
Direct camera control also becomes trickier and slower since you lose fast access to the right analog stick. These traditional controls don’t feel as intuitive as the motion controls the game was clearly built around. For example, you now use the right analog stick to replicate waving your hands around to perform actions.
Fortunately, Skyward Sword HD utilizes a standard control scheme. Plus, the motion controls wouldn’t work in handheld mode. The fact that they were mandatory in the original game turned off many people. Not everyone likes motion controls, though. In TV mode, the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers pull off these motion controls just fine, as long as you remember to reset them every so often with a quick calibration button press. Link’s hand followed your movements as you slashed your sword in specific directions, rolled bombs like bowling balls, and guided your bird and beetle drone like paper airplanes. On the Wii, the game served as a showcase for the MotionPlus accessory’s enhanced gyroscope controls. Skyward Sword's original control scheme was the biggest hurdle in terms of porting the game to other platforms.
